Gene Burch Plumbing, Heating & Air offers many “green” products to help you save energy and protect our environment. These include water saving plumbing products, as well as energy saving heating and cooling equipment.
One of the largest water users are toilets. Over the past few years, the industry has been incrementally lowering the water usage of toilets with improving technology. The latest models are called HET or High-Efficiency Toilets, some of which use a dual flushing system. They allow you to use .8 gallons of water for flushing liquids, and depending on the model, 1.28 or 1.6 gallons for solid waste. As a result, these units can save you thousands of gallons of water a year.
All code-approved plumbing faucets also have reduced water usage, which contributes to increased water savings throughout your home or office. Changing out your older plumbing fixtures to the newer models will allow you to substantially lower your water usage.
On the hot water side of our the industry, there have been many changes. For instance, we have been primarily using standard tank 6.1% efficient water heaters to heat our water for over a hundred years. These consist of a tank of water that is heated 24 hours a day 365 days a year whether you need hot water or not. A modern, more environmentally-friendly option is an “on-demand” or “tankless” system, which only heats the water when you turn it on. Obviously, this is going to save you a lot of energy.
In addition, once you turn them on, they will not run out of hot water, so you do not have to ever worry about getting a cold shower again. These systems are now available with as high as 98% efficiency. Also available is a 96% efficient storage tank water heater. This water heater is an answer for some of the gas sizing and flue issues with the on-demand type water heater.
The heating and cooling industry has really been on the cutting edge of energy savings for many years now. Some of the latest models of furnaces and boilers are now up to 97% efficiency. Compare that to the 60% efficiency of the older models, whereby 40% of your utility dollars are wasted and just go up the flue pipe. The options and choices today are many, which allows you to select the very best products for your particular heating needs. The various plumbing, HVAC, and building codes have also changed and really become green. For instance, it is now required that your existing ductwork is tested and is operating at peak efficiency.
For AC systems, a new system’s energy savings can be thousands of dollars per year over your older one. There has also been an improvement in air quality products, which now allow you to provide the highest efficiency air filtration and purification systems for your home or office.
Great job as always! I have recommended Gene Burch to many friends and neighbors.
